FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
About Seaview
Does Seaview cost money?
No, Seaview is tuition-free.
Is this an asynchronous or synchronous program?
Seaview is a predominantly asynchronous program. All work can be done through our online platform, but students have the option to synchronously connect with their teacher. There is not a synchronous class students need to attend.
Is there a set schedule?
Day to day scheduling is flexible, students can work at their own pace. Students have progress checkpoints they need to meet in order to stay on track with the semester, but they can work on their classes whenever it works best for them. Each week students must have two way communication with their mentor teacher to meet attendance requirements. At the end of every month families meet with their mentor teacher to discuss monthly progress. These meetings can be held virtually or in-person and scheduled to accommodate family needs.
How many hours a day should I be working?
Teachers recommend planning on 45 minutes to an hour for each class each school day. However, this is just a rough estimate. Time spent working will vary depending on the student, grade level, and activities completed.
Online Learning
What is an ALE?
An Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) is public education where some or all of the instruction is delivered outside of a regular classroom schedule. It is available to all public school districts and public charter schools in Washington state. The intent of ALE is to ensure that students have educational opportunities designed to meet their individualized needs. ALE follows all public education requirements as well as Chapter 392-550 WAC.
Does Seaview serve students with special needs or advanced needs?
Seaview offers a spectrum of courses and learning plans to meet student needs including honors, AP, and remedial materials. To discuss your student’s particular needs, please contact the Seaview office.
How do students interact with teachers and other classmates in a virtual environment?
Our younger students have the opportunity to come in-person for enrichment activities to help build their social skills. For our students who are unable to come in-person, our teachers facilitate online meets to fulfill that need. All of our students interact with their teacher on a weekly basis, per ALE attendance rules.
How do students contact their teachers?
After being accepted at Seaview, students are paired up with a mentor teacher. This mentor teacher will reach out, either by phone or email, shortly after acceptance to set up an initial orientation meeting. Students can reach out either by phone call, text, email, or through our online platform messaging system. Teachers will communicate their preference during the initial meeting.
How does attendance work at Seaview?
Students need to check in weekly with their teacher, per ALE guidelines. The teacher will set the expectation for how to check in for attendance. Since Seaview takes weekly attendance, each missed attendance checkpoint counts for five absent days. Timely attendance check-ins are very important at Seaview.
How much time do students spend on the computer?
Our younger students (K-3) will spend less time on the computer than our older students (4-12). Teachers recommend planning on 45 minutes to an hour for each class each school day. Time spent working will vary depending on the student, grade level, and activities completed.
What are the parent/guardian’s roles and responsibilities?
A parent/guardian acts as the student’s Learning Coach. A Learning Coach supports a student’s online education journey at home. In this role, you offer academic guidance to meet your student’s unique needs, while consistently staying in touch and working with teachers to help your child succeed.
In elementary and middle school, the Learning Coach works closely with teachers to help the student through daily lessons, modifying the pace and schedule as needed. The Learning Coach manages the student’s schedule and ensures that work is completed at a reasonable pace, while teachers monitor progress, ensure mastery, and develop specific intervention plans when a student is struggling.
In high school, the role changes to one of oversight—still an important supportive role to help the student stay on task and ensure the student is following through on assignments. High school students are expected to start managing their own time and academic schedule more directly.

Yes. You can participate in WIAA sports with the closest school district that offers those activities. However, you will have to meet that school's and the WIAA’s athletic eligibility requirements. Other activities such as school-sponsored clubs and dances in your local district may not be available unless approved by those schools.
What is expected of me to continue enrollment at Seaview?
Weekly attendance check-ins and satisfactory monthly progress reports. If too many attendance checkpoints are missed, or a student receives three unsatisfactory monthly progress reports, they will be asked to enroll in their closest resident school.

But Seaview does loan Chromebooks when needed that runs school district software. For our out-of-district students, we can ship Chromebooks/chargers to your mailing address. We also provide return postage. If a Chromebook or charger is lost or broken, fines will apply, but there is no cost if the Chromebook/charger is returned.
Choice Transfer
Why do I need a Choice Transfer?
A Choice Transfer allows a student to go to a school outside of their designated school district. The resident school district must agree to release the student to the nonresident school district before a student can be officially enrolled at the new school.
What does “Resident School District” mean?
Resident School District is the school district where the student currently lives.
What does “Nonresident School District” mean?
Nonresident School District is any school district that is outside the student’s resident school district. In this case, Seaview Academy belongs to the Port Angeles School District. If you are completing a Choice Transfer for Seaview, you should put “Port Angeles School District” for Nonresident School District. Then make sure to select “Seaview Academy”.
